Overview

Clostridiosis refers to a group of enteric diseases caused primarily by Clostridium perfringens, a Gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium. The most economically significant manifestation is Necrotic Enteritis (NE), one of the leading causes of production losses in broiler chickens worldwide.

Clostridia are normal inhabitants of the poultry intestinal microbiota. Disease develops when bacterial overgrowth occurs due to predisposing factors that disrupt intestinal homeostasis.

Pathogenicity

Pathogenicity depends on

  • Toxin production (especially NetB toxin in poultry)
  • Rapid bacterial proliferation
  • Intestinal epithelial damage

Major predisposing factors include

  • Coccidiosis
  • High-protein diets (fish meal, animal protein)
  • Wheat- or barley-based diets (high NSP content)
  • Mycotoxins
  • Immunosuppression
  • Environmental and management stress

Disease results in

  • Intestinal mucosal necrosis
  • Reduced nutrient absorption
  • Dysbiosis
  • Increased mortality in severe outbreaks

Clinical Signs

Clinical Necrotic Enteritis

Subclinical Necrotic Enteritis

  • Poor feed conversion ratio (FCR)
  • Reduced daily weight gain

Gross Lesions

  • Thickened intestinal wall
  • Brown pseudomembrane ("Turkish towel" appearance)
  • Necrotic mucosa
  • Gas-filled intestines

Because C. perfringens normally exists in healthy birds, disease is usually triggered by intestinal imbalance rather than introduction of a new pathogen.

Bacterial Shedding

  • Organisms are shed continuously in feces.
  • Environmental contamination increases rapidly during outbreaks.
  • Spores survive for prolonged periods in poultry houses.
